Provide data and statistical analysis support for a research team focused on health equity and social justice at the intersection of public health and geography. Team research foci include disparities in cancer, COVID-19, cardiovascular conditions, and stress/well-being among diverse populations. Collaborate on study design; data collection, management and analysis; interpretation of results; preparation of data summaries and reports and publication and communication of research findings. Investigate and resolve problems. Direct and/or check the work of other staff and students. Work as part of a multi-project team with diverse community and academic partners.

Primary Functions

  • Operate specialized computer hardware and software to collect, quality check, manage, analyze, display and communicate data.
  • Report results of statistical analyses, including in the form of graphs, charts, tables, maps and other data visualizations.
  • Identify relationships and trends in data, as well as any factors that could affect the results of research; adapt statistical methods and approaches to solve specific problems.
  • Perform complex statistical analyses accurately and efficiently.
  • Analyze and interpret statistical data to identify significant differences in relationships among sources of information.
  • Develop software applications or programming to use for statistical modeling and graphic analysis.
  • Develop and test experimental designs, sampling techniques, and analytical methods.
  • Provide expertise in the development and maintenance of data management systems that optimize the efficiency of statistical analyses and reporting.
  • Design and develop data entry and storage modules; monitor data receipt; code and enter data accurately; ensure data security.
  • Review data for consistency, accuracy and quality; develop and execute programs to perform consistency checks; document and resolve data inconsistencies.
  • Assist in the preparation of study results for manuscripts to scientific journals and presentations at scientific conferences and in public venues.
  • Collaborate with scientific researchers in designing studies and writing research proposals, including analyzing proposed studies to determine feasibility and propose appropriate analytical approaches.
  • Present statistical and non-statistical results using charts, maps, and graphs in meetings or conferences to audiences such as clients, peers, and students.

Minimum Required Education: Master’s Degree

Minimum Required Experience: 1 year

Preferred Experience: 3 years

Field: biostatistics; statistics; data science; social sciences; health sciences

Knowledge – Skills – Abilities

Knowledge of mathematics, databases, computing, data security, documentation, records management, biology/health sciences, and social sciences

Abilities in data utilization, complex problem solving, critical thinking, troubleshooting, resource management, writing, listening and collaborating.

Essential skills: Highly skilled in R programming including Markdown and packages focused on epidemiologic and spatial data analysis. Skills in conceptualization, design, composition and production of complex data visualizations to clearly communicate analytic findings. Skills in manipulating complex databases and undertaking statistical analyses, including statistical modeling. Strong critical thinking, analytical, problem solving and trouble shooting skills. Highly accurate, detail oriented and organized. Clear, efficient and thoughtful written and verbal communication. Strong interpersonal skills and a team player. Responsible and dependable with attention to deadlines and skills in time management. Motivated, creative, and ready to learn new things. Skill in handling multiple competing priorities.

Desired skills: Specialized skills in statistical analysis and computer programming in any of the following areas: structural equation modeling, mixed effects modeling, mediation analysis, spatial modeling, web-based mapping. Software and programming experience may include: STATA, Esri Arcmap, Tableau, python, Leaflet, PostgreSQL, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery, Bootstrap, PHP, QGIS, PostGIS, Mapserver, Openlayers, Geoserver, R Shiny.
