Awards

Dear Colleagues,

For your awareness the Health and Medical Geography Group (HMGSG) sponsors several awards at the AAG Annual Meetings. Please encourage your students and colleagues who work in this field.

The Peter J. Gould Award is meant to promote written scholarship by students across the field. A $100 prize will be awarded in each of two categories: 1) undergraduate students, and 2) graduate students (Master’s and Doctoral). The deadline for abstract submissions is November 17th , 2022.

The Jacques May Thesis Prize is awarded to Master’s and doctoral theses addressing themes in health and medical geography broadly defined, as judged by a panel of reviewers. In the past, awardees have received a monetary award of $250 (doctoral) or $150 (Master’s). The deadline for nominations is (TBA).

The Emerging Scholar Award in Health and Medical Geography seeks to recognize early career scholars who show significant potential for distinguished scholarship in health and/or medical geography. Early career scholars who are in their 2nd-8th years of receiving their Ph.D. degree from an accredited degree program at the time of the 2021 AAG meeting are eligible for the award. The deadline of submission will be (TBA).

The Melinda S. Meade Distinguished Scholarship Award in Health and Medical Geography seeks to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the advancements of health and/or medical geography research. Contributions recognized by the Award are broadly conceived, including contributions to all specializations and perspectives in health and/or medical geography. The deadline of submission will be (TBA)

The Health Data Visualization Award aims to use spatial data offering insight into some health or medical geography topic. We offer two awards for this contest—one for a static visualization and one for a dynamic and/or interactive visualization. This year, we will be offering a monetary award for the winner in each group. The deadline of submission will be (TBA).

HMGSG also sponsors several student travel awards. Details will be presented closer to the AAG Annual Meeting. To increase the number of travel awards that we are able to offer students, please consider donating to the Health and Medical Geography Specialty Group
