Profile: Michael V. Hayes

Michael Hayes, Director of Health Eduction and Research at the University of Victoria. Michael’s research interests involve social geographies of health, disability and public policy. He was North American editor of Health and Place (Pergamon) until the end of 2003.

Michael Hayes took three degrees (Bachelor of Arts – Honours, 1979; Master of Health Sciences, 1985; and Ph. D, 1989) from McMaster University, during which time he worked with such luminaries as Michael Dear, Jonathan Lomas, and Martin Taylor. He has been, with temporary breaks for service in other organizations and pursuits, at Simon Fraser since completing his doctorate until moving to the University of Victoria in July, 2010. He was Associate Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at SFU, a faculty he co-founded in 2004, and a member of the Department of Geography there since 1988.

Michael has a score of publications (refereed journal papers and book chapters) in just the past five years.
