Dr. Peter Anthamatten, Assistant Professor, University of Colorado, Denver, CO, USA. Peter’s research interests focus on childhood obesity, GIS-Health, geographic education, and quantitative methods.
Peter was born near Chicago and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. He earned his B.A. in German, political science (international affairs), and geography at the University of Missouri Columbia in 1997. He proceeded to the University of Minnesota for graduate school, where he received his M.A. in geography (2001), M.P.H. in environmental epidemiology (2002), and Ph.D. in geography (2007). Although Peter enjoys working with a broad variety of topics in the discipline, including cartography, spatial analysis, bio-conservation, and especially geographic education, the primary focus of his graduate work was on the geography of health. As a student of public health, he became particularly interested in the interface between the health and geographic information sciences. His public health dissertation examined methods for assessing scientific uncertainty in an asbestos exposure assessment project. After spending some months in Costa Rica working with UNICEF officials on a project to assess iodine deficiency in rural parts of the country, Peter became interested in the geographic problems around diet, health, and food policy. His Ph.D . dissertation examined the relation between the biophysical environment and childhood malnutrition in Bolivia.
At the University of Colorado Denver, he teaches cartography, introduction to GIS, GIS applications in the health sciences, and medical geography. Peter is involved with several projects to assess obesity and evaluate the impact of urban environments on childhood obesity
