L. Gary Hart, Director, Center for Rural Health, and Professor, School of Medicine, University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND, USA. Gary’s specialties include rural health care, health workforce, clinical practice variation, geographic definition methodology and maternal and child health care issues.
Gary Hart received his PhD in medical geography in 1985 from the University of Washington. He also completed the Department of Health Services Doctoral Opportunities Program that same year, specializing in health services research. Gary has published widely on rural health care, health workforce, clinical practice variation, geographic definition methodology, and perinatal care issues at the national, regional, state, and local scales. In 1995, Gary received the National Rural Health Association’s Distinguished Researcher award. He is a co-editor of a 2001 McGraw-Hill book entitled Rural Medicine, and is an author on over 160 articles in, among others, the Journal of the American Medical Association, Health Services Research, Health Affairs, Journal of Rural Health, and the American Journal of Public Health. He is on many advisory committees/boards, including those of the Journal of Rural Health and Health Services Research. Gary is also on the agency for Health Research and Quality’s (AHRQ’s) Health Systems Research Study Section where many of his reviews are related to rural, workforce, and geographic health care-related proposals. In addition, Gary is the Principal investigator on many currently funded federal and state programs and projects.
