The Health and Medical Geography Group (HMGSG) sponsors several awards at the AAG Annual Meetings. Please encourage your students and colleagues who work in this field. Deadlines are noted at each award’s respective page (below, in links).
Scholar Awards
Melinda S. Meade Distinguished Scholarship Award
The Melinda S. Meade Distinguished Scholarship Award in Health and Medical Geography seeks to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the advancements of health and/or medical geography research. Contributions recognized by the Award are broadly conceived, including contributions to all specializations and perspectives in health and/or medical geography.
Mid-Career Scholar Award
The Mid-Career Scholar Award in Health and Medical Geography recognizes scholars making exceptional contributions after their early career periods have concluded, but before the window typically considered for the distinguished scholar award.
Emerging Scholar Award
The Emerging Scholar Award in Health and Medical Geography seeks to recognize early career scholars who show significant potential for distinguished scholarship in health and/or medical geography. Early career scholars who have completed their PhD but have not yet completed 8 years of active career service at the time of the AAG meeting are eligible to apply.
Student Awards
Jacques May Thesis Prize
The Jacques May Thesis Prize is awarded to Master’s and doctoral theses addressing themes in health and medical geography broadly defined, as judged by a panel of reviewers. In the past, awardees have received a monetary award of $250 (doctoral) or $150 (Master’s).
Peter Gould Student Paper Award
The Peter J. Gould Student Paper Award is meant to promote written scholarship by students across the field. A $100 prize will be awarded in each of two categories: 1) undergraduate students, and 2) graduate students (Master’s and Doctoral).
Travel Awards
HMGSG also sponsors several travel awards geared towards students and trainees. There are generally three travel awards available for the American Association of Geographers Annual Meeting, and at least two travel awards for the bi-annual International Medical Geography Symposium.
Health Data Visualization Awards
The Health Data Visualization Award aims to use spatial data offering insight into some health or medical geography topic. We offer two awards for this contest—one for a static visualization and one for a dynamic and/or interactive visualization.
