. Dr. Susan Macey, Professor of Geography, Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas, USA. Dr. Macey’s research focus is on environmental health issues, particularly those related to the human impact of hazards, energy utilization, and equity. Susan has chaired three AAG specialty groups – Aging, Energy and Environment, and GIS – and served as an officer in the Health and Medical Geography and Hazards Specialty Groups.
Susan earned her B.A. (Honors) and M.A. in Geography from the University of Queensland, in her native Australia. Before moving to the US to pursue her doctorate, she spent two and a half years as a tutor at the University of Newcastle, Australia. After completing her Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, Urbana, she took a one year visiting position at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, and then spent five years as an assistant professor at Rutgers University, New Jersey before moving to Texas.
Dr. Macey’s research has examined spatial patterns and correlates of elderly temperature related mortality, and socioeconomic and demographic patterns surrounding potential technological hazard sites such as nuclear power plants and pipelines. Her work has been published in a variety of journals including Risk: Health, Safety and Environment, Journal of Applied Gerontology, The Gerontologist, and Energy: The International Journal. Susan’s current research is focused on identifying the subpopulations at risk and the health impacts of air pollution from human and wildfire origins.
Susan has over thirty years of teaching experience, predominantly in geographic techniques, including cartography and GIS, and environmental topics.
