Dr. Widener is faculty in the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto – St. George campus in downtown Toronto, Ontario. He is a transportation and health geographer who uses quantitative methods (e.g. simulation models, geocomputation, and spatial analysis) to understand how people access health services and healthy opportunities. His past research has focused on healthy food environments and access to food retailers, the health of older adults in cities, access to health services for residents in the far north of Canada, and disaster relief.
