Dr. Kevin McCracken, Dean of the Division of Environmental and Life Sciences and Associate Professor, Department of Human Geography, Macquarie University, North Ryde, NSW Australia. Kevin’s research is focused on geographical inequalities in health and population ageing.
Kevin McCracken was born in New Zealand and did his Bachelors and Masters degrees at the University of Otago before undertaking his PhD in Geography at the University of Alberta, Canada. His teaching (population and medical geography) and research career has been spent at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia, along with periods of study leave at Cornell University and the University of North Carolina – Charlotte. Kevin’s research interests in recent years have centered on community needs assessment, relationships between the social environment and health, spatio-temporal changes in disease patterns, population ageing and the health of the elderly. His other main area of writing has been on various aspects of teaching population studies/human geography at secondary and tertiary levels. Kevin has recently co-authored, with Professor David Phillips, articles on the epidemiological transition (for Elsevier’s forthcoming International Encyclopaedia of Human Geography ), and in a book of readings ( Ageing and Place: Perspectives, Policy, Practice — 2005, Routledge). He has published in outlets such as the New South Wales Public Health Bulletin, Journal of the Royal Society Interface, Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health, and Social Science Medicine.
